Level 1 (preliminary):

The European Language Certificates - Japanese (A2)

Background information: This certificate is part of The European Language Certificates scheme established by the German Adult Education Association and is offered by all member organisations of the International Certificate Conference (ICC) and in licensed centres by the WBT Further Education Test Systems. The ICC is an international association of European adult education organisations. The European Language Certificates are available at three levels i.e. A2, B1 and B2. Examinations at the lowest level i.e. A2 are currently available for 10 languages, including Japanese.

Test Sites / Results: This test can be taken at all language centres run by ICC members in Europe.

Level 2 (elementary):

The Japanese Language Proficiency Test - Level 4

Background information: The Japanese Language Proficiency Tests were designed to evaluate the language proficiency of non-native speakers. The examination is available at four levels, Level 1 being the most advanced. Candidates attempting Level 4 should have a vocabulary of about 100 kanji / 800 words and have mastered elementary level grammar. The required level of language proficiency is usually avhieved after 150 hours of tuition. The test comprises three sections i.e. writing and vocabulary; listening; reading and grammar. The total testing time is 100 minutes.

Test Sites / Results / Dates: The test can be taken in Japan, local cultural exchanges or at educational institutions abroad. Level 4 requires a 60% pass mark. All candidates receive their score reports; successful examinees are awarded Certificates of Proficiency. Exams are held in December.

Level 3 (intermediate):

The Japanese Language Proficiency Test - Level 3

Background information: The Japanese Language Proficiency Tests were designed to evaluate the language proficiency of non-native speakers. The examination is available at four levels, Level 1 being the most advanced. Candidates attempting Level 3 should have a vocabulary of about 300 kanji / 1500 words and have mastered basic grammar. The required level of language proficiency is usually avhieved after 300 hours of tuition. The test comprises three sections i.e. writing and vocabulary; listening; reading and grammar. The total testing time is 145 minutes.

Test Sites / Results / Dates: The test can be taken in Japan, local cultural exchanges or at educational institutions abroad. Level 3 requires a 60% pass mark. All candidates receive their score reports; successful examinees are awarded Certificates of Proficiency. Exams are held in December.

The Japanese Language Proficiency Test - Level 2

Background information: The Japanese Language Proficiency Tests were designed to evaluate the language proficiency of non-native speakers. The examination is available at four levels, Level 1 being the most advanced. Candidates attempting Level 2 should have a vocabulary of about 1000 kanji / 6000 words and have mastered basic grammar. The required level of language proficiency is usually avhieved after 600 hours of tuition. The test comprises three sections i.e. writing and vocabulary; listening; reading and grammar. The total testing time is 145 minutes.

Level 5 (advanced):

The Japanese Language Proficiency Test - Level 1

Background information: The Japanese Language Proficiency Tests were designed to evaluate the language proficiency of non-native speakers. The examination is available at four levels, Level 1 being the most advanced. Most national / local universities, as well as an increasing number of private universities require the Level 1 exam. Candidates attempting Level 1 should have a vocabulary of about 2000 kanji / 10000 words and have mastered grammar. The required level of language proficiency is usually avhieved after 900 hours of tuition. The test comprises three sections i.e. writing and vocabulary; listening; reading and grammar. The total testing time is 3 hours.

Test Sites / Results / Dates: The test can be taken in Japan, local cultural exchanges or at educational institutions abroad. Level 1 requires a 70% pass mark. All candidates receive their score reports; successful examinees are awarded Certificates of Proficiency. Exams are held in December.

Certificates / Tests for various levels of language proficiency:

Japan Kanji Aptitude Test

Background information: The Japan Kanji Aptitude Test was designed to test the candidate’s Japanese character writing ability (both native / non-native candidates may take this test). The examination is available at 10 levels, Level 1 being the most advanced and requiring knowledge of about 6,000 kanji. At the lowest level i.e. Level 10, candidates should have knowledge of the 80 kanji taught in Japanese Elementary School. The total testing time for Levels 1 - 7 is 60 minutes and 40 minutes for Levels 8 - 10. The Japan Kanji Aptitude Test is recognised by both educational and professional bodies.

Test Sites / Results / Dates: The test can be taken at recognised examination centres. Tests can also be arranged individually at various locations (subject to a minimum of 20 test candidates). The pass mark for Levels Pre-1, 1 and 2; and Levels 8-10 is 80%. The pass mark for Levels 3-7 is 70%. All successful candidates receive a certificate.

JETRO Business Japanese Proficiency Test - Level 3

Background information: The JETRO Business Japanese Proficiency Test was established by the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO), with support from various Japanese ministries. The aim of the JETRO is to teach foreign nationals all aspects of Japanese business communication.

The JETRO Test comprises a) The Listening / Reading Comprehension Test (available at three levels of difficulty i.e. Levels I - III) and b) The JETRO Oral Communication Test (JOCT).

Candidates can take more than one level of the Listening and Reading Comprehension Test in one day. Those passing Level I (the most difficult) can take the JOCT (usually taken within three months of completing the Listening and Reading Comprehension Test). Candidates attempting Level III should be capable of communicating in simple business terms and possess partial knowledge of business vocabulary / Japanese business customs and practices. The exam has a duration of 70 minutes.

Test Sites / Results / Dates: The test can be taken once a year at test centres in Japan and in various countries abroad, including Thailand; China; Australia; the USA; Canada; France; Ireland; United Kingdom; The Netherlands; Germany and Italy. Candidates either pass or fail. Successful candidates receive an official certificate.

Background information: The JETRO Oral Communication Test was devised by the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO), with support from various Japanese ministries. The aim of the JETRO is to teach foreign nationals all aspects of Japanese business communication. The JETRO Test comprises a) The Listening / Reading Comprehension Test (available at three levels of difficulty i.e. Levels I - III) and b) The JETRO Oral Communication Test (JOCT).

Candidates can take more than one level of the Listening and Reading Comprehension Test in one day. Those passing Level I (the most difficult) can take the JOCT (usually taken within three months of completing the Listening and Reading Comprehension Test). The JOCT is designed to evaluate oral Japanese communication skills. The exam consists of a recorded interview with two examiners during which there is a general conversation and role playing. The total testing time is 30 minutes.

Test Sites / Results / Dates: The JOCT can only be taken once a year in Tokyo. Candidates are awarded grades, ranging from A+ (Excellent) to D
