Finnish Language Certificates / Tests
GENERAL LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY CERTIFICATES / TESTS
The following are listed according to level of difficulty:
Level 1 (preliminary):
Suomen Kieli Perustaso (Basic Level)Background information: The Suomen Kieli Perustaso was established by the Finnish National Board of Education and the Centre for Applied Language Studies, University of Jyväskylä. This is a language test for beginners and students should be able to communicate in standard everyday situations. The exam focuses on reading, writing, listening, speaking and structural competence i.e. knowledge of grammar and vocabulary.
Test Sites / Results / Dates: The test can be taken at centres in both Finland and abroad. Grades are given for each test section and the overall grade is then calculated. Tests may be taken in either April or November and results are available within two months.

Level 2 (elementary):
Suomen Kieli Keskitaso (Intermediate Level)The Suomen Kieli Keskitaso was established by the Finnish National Board of Education and the Centre for Applied Language Studies, University of Jyväskylä. This is a language proficiency test taken at an elementary level and students should be capable of communicating in standard social / work situations. The exam focuses on reading, writing, listening, speaking and structural competence i.e. knowledge of grammar and vocabulary.

Level 3 (intermediate):
Suomen Kieli Ylin Taso (Advanced Level)The Suomen Kieli Keskitaso was established by the Finnish National Board of Education and the Centre for Applied Language Studies, University of Jyväskylä. This is a language proficiency test taken at an intermediate level and students should be capable of interacting in complex social and work situations. The exam focuses on reading, writing, listening, speaking and structural competence i.e. knowledge of grammar and vocabulary.
