ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) - Basic Level

Background information: The ESOL certificates were established by Pitman Qualifications and comprise a set of general English language proficiency tests. The ESOL Basic Level exam is the first of five progressive levels and tests listening, reading and writing. Candidates are expected to have the ability to communicate in basic everyday situations. The exam has a duration of 2 hours. The ESOL tests are complemented by the separately-administered Spoken ESOL examinations, available at the same levels. The ESOL Basic Level exam is also available for ages 9 -13 years.

Background information: The ESOL Elementary Level exam is the second of five progressive levels and is equivalent to the Council of Europe's Waystage Level. The following language skills are tested: listening, reading and writing. Candidates should be able to communicate in standard everyday situations. The ESOL certificates are complemented by the separately-administered Spoken ESOL examinations, for all levels. The ESOL Elementary Level exam is also available for ages 9 -13 years.

Test Sites / Results / Dates: The test can be taken at recognised examination centres worldwide and the 2-hour exam has a pass mark of 60%. Candidates achieving 75% are awarded a first class pass. Pitman examinations are available on demand, but test dates are usually chosen by the examination centres.

KET (Key English Test)

Background information: The KET was established by UCLES and is a proficiency test for beginners. Skills tested include reading, listening, writing and speaking. UCLES certificates are internationally recognised.

Test Sites / Results / Dates: This test can be taken at approved examination centres in both the UK and abroad. Passing grades are either 'pass with merit' or 'pass', while failing grades are either 'narrow fail' or 'fail'. Exams are held throughout the year, including March; May; June (twice); November and December.

SESOL - Initial Stage (Spoken English for Speakers of Other Languages)

Background information: The tests of Spoken English for Speakers of Other Languages were established by Trinity College, London. Trinity offers a series of twelve progressive oral English language proficiency tests for foreign nationals. The series is divided into four separate stages, each comprising 3 levels: Initial Stage (grades 1 - 3), Elementary Stage (grades 4 - 6), Intermediate Stage (grades 7 - 9) and Advanced Stage (grades 10 - 12). Exams take the form of a face-to-face interview with the examiner and are roughly 5 - 7 minutes in duration.

The European Language Certificates - English (A2)

Background information: This certificate forms part of The European Language Certificates scheme established by the German Adult Education Association. It is offered in all member organisations of the International Certificate Conference (ICC) and in licensed centres by the WBT Further Education Test Systems. The ICC is an international association of European adult education organisations. The European Language Certificates are available at three levels i.e. A2, B1, B2. Examinations at the lowest level i.e. A2 are currently available for 10 languages, including English.

ARELS Preliminary Examination

Background information: The ARELS Preliminary Examination was established by the University of Oxford Delegacy of Local Examinations (UODLE), which is part of the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES). The Oxford-ARELS examinations are designed as complementary English language proficiency tests and serve to test the student’s practical communication skills. The Oxford exams test reading and writing skills, while ARELS examine speaking and listening skills.The ARELS Preliminary Examination is based on Council of Europe's Waystage Level specification. Candidates should be be able to communicate in a limited number of everyday situations. The required level of proficiency is usually achieved after a minimum of 300 - 400 hours of tuition. The exam has three components i.e. Social English, Aural Comprehension and Extended Speaking.

Test Sites / Results / Dates: The test may be taken at recognised examination centres in both the UK and abroad. There are three passing grades i.e. ‘pass’, ‘good pass’ and ‘very good pass’ and results are available within 7 weeks. CCSE - Level 1 (Certificates in Communicative Skills in English)

Background information: The CCSE - Level 1 was established by UCLES and is an assessment of the student’s understanding of the English language based on a series of task-based examinations. The examination tests the student's language skills in four areas i.e. reading, writing, verbal / communication and listening. The CCSE certificates are available at four levels of difficulty, with CCSE Level 1 (elementary level) being roughly the equivalent of the Cambridge PET test.

CAE (Certificate in Advanced English)

Background information: The CAE is an appropriate examination for those intent on pursuing English as a second language for study or professional purposes. The certificate is accepted by many British universities as an English entrance requirement. The examination emphasises 'real world' situations and comprises five sections i.e. ‘English in use’; ‘Speaking’; ‘Listening’; ‘Reading’ and ‘Writing’. Students taking this exam should have completed the FCE and are expected to understand and produce texts at various levels (including formal). The CAE certificate is internationally recognised.

IELTS (The International English Language Testing System)

Background information: IELTS is managed by The University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES), the British Council and IDP Australia.

IELTS is a language test for non-native speakers who intend studying or training in English; the exam is suitable at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It assesses both general and specific language skills and includes a written / verbal element. It is accepted as an English language entrance requirement in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the UK and the USA. All candidates take identical listening and oral modules, but there is a choice in terms of writing and reading. If candidates intend undertaking academic studies it is recommended that they take the academic modules. However, if they intend working or training in English, the General Training module is more appropriate. The total testing time is 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Test Site/s: The test can be taken at IELTS examination centres in 105 countries. Test results are available within two weeks and the official report reveals a band score for the individual test sections, as well as an overall performance score. There are nine band scores ranging from 1 (minimum score) to 9 (expert user - maximum score). IELTS is not a pass / fail test. The average UK and Australian University requirement is 6.5. Overseas doctors wishing to work in the UK are required to take the IELTS before sitting the PLAB Test; examinees must achieve a minimum band score of 7.0 (minimum of 6.0 in each test section).

MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery)

Background information: MELAB was established by the English Language Institute at the University of Michigan. COTE (Certificate for Overseas Teachers of English)

Background information: The COTE forms part of the Cambridge Integrated Language Teaching Schemes (CILTS) and is designed for both native and non-native English speakers (but especially the latter). DELTA (Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults)

Background information: The DELTA was established by UCLES and replaces the Cambridge DTEFLA (Diploma in Teaching English as a Foreign Language to Adults) and DOTE (Diploma for Overseas Teachers of English). The DELTA is part of the Cambridge Integrated Language Teaching Schemes (CILTS) designed for both native and non-native English speakers. SET (Senior English Test)

Background information: The SET was established by The Associated Examining Board (AEB), which has since merged with the Northern Examinanations and Assessment Board (NEAB), to form the Assessment and Qualifications Alliance (AQA). Background information: The EFB examinations were established by the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry. They are available on four levels, ranging from basic language skills in written office communication to understanding / preparing material on diverse business topics. The EFB second level comprises an extended written task (composition of a memo, report or article); letter writing and the redrafting of a text. The total testing time is 2.5 hours. At EFB levels 2 and 3 candidates have the option of an Oral Test. EFB level 2 is accepted by some UK universities as an EFL entry requirement. On these occasions, the Oral Test would be a compulsory component. LCCIEB qualifications are internationally recognised by universities, employers, ministries and other professional bodies.

Test Sites / Results / Dates: EFB examinations are available at centres recognised by the LCCI and may be taken in either March, May, June / July or November / December. The test is also available on demand.

English for Office Skills - Level 2

Background information: This certificate was established by Pitman Qualifications and certifies the student capable of communicating accurately in an office environment. Candiates should have an intermediate English language proficiency. The exam covers a) dictated spelling and listening comprehension and b) reading comprehension, vocabulary and accuracy.

Test Sites / Results / Dates: This test may be taken at recognised examination centres worldwide. They are available on demand, but test dates are usually set by the examination centres. The pass mark is 60%, but those achieving a score of 75% are awarded a first class pass.

BEC 3 (Business English Certificate)

Background information: The BEC 3 was established by UCLES and provides additional business English skills to those who are already at an advanced level. The exam comprises three components i.e. reading / writing, listening and speaking.

Test Sites / Results / Dates: This test can be taken at recognised examination centres in both the UK and abroad. Passing grades are rated either A, B or C

for the reading, writing and listening components, while the verbal element is rated either a 1 or 2, or unsuccessful. Tests may be taken in either May or November.

CEIBT (Certificate in English for International Business and Trade)

Background information: The CEIBT was established by UCLES and is designed to test the student's English communication skills in authentic business situations. Four skills are tested i.e. listening, speaking, reading and writing. UCLES certificates are internationally recognised.

Test Sites / Results / Dates: The CEIBT can be taken at approved examination centres in both the UK and abroad. Successful candidates are awarded either a 'pass with distinction', 'pass' or 'fail' on each paper. The reading, writing and listening test dates are in May, June and December. Speaking component test dates are in May, June, July and December.

EBC (English for Business Communication) - Level 3

Background information: The EBC level 3 was established by Pitman Qualifications and enables the candidate to communicate effectively and independently in a wide range of business communications. The level of language required is equivalent to the Pitman ESOL Advanced Level. The exam requires the candidate to assume the role of an employee and respond to six different written tasks.
