Dutch Language Certificates / Tests

GENERAL LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY CERTIFICATES / TESTS

The following are listed according to level of difficulty:

Level 1 (preliminary):

The European Language Certificates - Nederlands (A2)

Background information: This certificate forms part of the European Language Certificates scheme established by the German Adult Education Association. It is offered by all member organisations of the International Certificate Conference (ICC) and in licenced centres by the WBT Further Education Test Systems. The ICC is an international association of European adult education organisations. The European Language Certificates are available at three levels i.e. A2, B1, B2 and examinations at the lowest level i.e. A2 are available for 10 languages, including Dutch.

Test Sites: Tests may be taken at any language centre run by an ICC (International Certificate Conference) member in Europe. The European Language Certificates are internationally recognized.

Level 2 (elementary):


CNaVT (Certificaat Nederlands als Vreemde Taal) - EK (Examen Elementaire Kennis)

Background information: The CNaVT examinations were established by CNaVT, a non-profit organisation founded - and subsidised - by both the Belgium and Dutch governments. The CNaVT EK is a Dutch language proficiency test taken at elementary / low-intermediate level. Candidates should be capable of interacting in everyday social / work situations. The exam comprises four sections which may be taken separately i.e. reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Test Sites / Results / Dates: The CNaVT EK may be written at examination centres worldwide. Grades are awarded for each test section; the passing grades are either 'very good', 'good', highly satisfactory' or 'satisfactory'. In case of failure, the relevant test section/s may be rewritten at a future date. Students who have passed one, two or three sections are awarded a partial CNaVT EK diploma. Examinations are written in May and results are available within three months.

The European Language Certificates - Certificaat Nederlands (B1)

Background information: The Certificaat Nederlands is part of the European Language Certificates scheme established by the German Adult Education Association. It is offered by all member organisations of the International Certificate Conference (ICC) and in licensed centres by the WBT Further Education Test Systems. The ICC is an international association of European adult education organisations. The European Language Certificates are available at three levels i.e. A2, B1, B2. Examinations at B1 level are currently available in 8 languages, including Dutch. The examination comprises a written and oral section and the total testing time is approximately 3 hours.

Test Sites: The test can be taken at any language centre run by an ICC (International Certificate Conference) member in Europe. The European Language Certificates are internationally recognised.

Level 3 (intermediate):

 

 

CNaVT (Certificaat Nederlands als Vreemde Taal) - BK (Examen Basiskennis)

Background information: The CNaVT BK is a language proficiency test taken at intermediate level and is the equivalent of the CITO Staatsexamen Nederlands als Tweede Taal, Examen I (NT2-I). Examinees should be able to interact in a variety of general / specific contexts. The exam comprises four sections which may be taken separately i.e. reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Test Sites / Results / Dates: The CNaVT BK can be taken at examination centres worldwide. Grades are awarded for each test section; the passing grades are either 'very good', 'good', highly satisfactory' or 'satisfactory'. In case of failure, the relevant test section/s can be taken again at a subsequent sitting. Students who have passed one, two or three sections are awarded a partial CNaVT BK diploma. Examinations are written in May and results are available within three months.

Staatsexamen Nederlands als Tweede Taal, Examen I (NT2-I) (trainer/occupations)

Background information: The NT2-I was established by CITO, the Dutch National Institute for Educational Measurement, founded by the Ministry of Education and Science. This is a Dutch language proficiency test taken at intermediate level (equivalent to the CNaVT Basiskennis). Obtaining the NT2-I qualifies students to undergo training and take up work in The Netherlands.

Test Sites / Results / Dates: The examination comprises four sections i.e. reading, writing, listening and speaking and students are awarded either a pass or fail for each test section. The NT2-I diploma is awarded to those candidates who have passed all four sections. Examination results are available within 4 weeks after taking the test.

Level 4 (advanced intermediate):

CNaVT (Certificaat Nederlands als Vreemde Taal) - UK (Examen Uitgebreide Kennis)

Background information: The CNaVT examinations were established by CNaVT, a non-profit organisation founded - and subsidised - by both the Belgium and Dutch governments. The CNaVT UK is a language proficiency test taken at advanced level and is equivalent to the CITO Staatsexamen Nederlands als Tweede Taal, Examen II (NT2-II). The certificate enables candidates to enter the higher education sector or use Dutch in professional situations. The complete CNaVT UK is recognised by both Belgium and The Netherlands.

Test Sites / Results / Dates: The exam comprises four sections that may be written separately i.e. reading, writing, listening and speaking. The CNaVT UK may be taken at examination centres worldwide. Grades are awarded for each test section; the passing grades are either 'very good', 'good', highly satisfactory' or 'satisfactory'. In case of failure, the relevant test section/s can be taken again at a subsequent sitting. Students who have passed one, two or three sections are awarded a partial CNaVT UK diploma. Examinations are held in May and results are available within three months.

 

Staatsexamen Nederlands als Tweede Taal, Examen II (NT2-II) (higher education/professions)

Background information: The NT2-II was established by CITO, the Dutch National Institute for Educational Measurement founded by the Ministry of Education and Science. This is a Dutch language proficiency test taken at advanced level and is equivalent to the CNaVT Uitgebreide Kennis. In contrast to the NT2-I, the NT2-II requires a higher level of abstract ability and a wider range of vocabulary. This certificate qualifies students to enter the higher education sector and the professions in The Netherlands.

Test Sites / Results / Dates: The examination comprises four elements i.e. reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students are awarded either a 'pass' or 'fail' for each test section and the diploma is only awarded to those who have passed all four sections. Examination results are available within 4 weeks after taking the test.
