Background information: The Certificat Internacional de Català - Nivell Bàsic was established by the Generalitat de Catalunya, Direcció General de Política Lingüistica (DGPL). It is the first of two language proficiency tests designed for foreign nationals. The test is based on the Council of Europe's Waystage Level specification and candidates should be capable of communicating in a limited number of everyday situations. The test comprises four sections i.e. reading, listening, speaking and communicative awareness.

Test Sites / Results / Dates: The test can be taken at examination centres in Europe and America and students are awarded either a 'pass' or a 'fail'. Examinations are usually held in May.

The test is based on the Council of Europe's Threshold Level specification and candidates should be capable of dealing with most social / travel-related situations. The test comprises reading; writing; listening; speaking and structural competence i.e. grammar and vocabulary.

Test Sites / Results / Dates: The test can be taken at examination centres in Europe and America and grades are rated either 'excellent', 'good', 'satisfactory' or 'pass'. Examinations are held in May.
